Hello everyone, Suzie wanted me to pass along that all went well today with the procedure to shock Will's heart. She thanks all for their prayers.

Suzie also wanted me to pass along that she will pick a winner of the caption contest Wednesday night. I take it that the contest is not over so posting one tomorrow seems fair.

Playing God cannot end well

by cleveland | Jul 17, 2017

China is going full speed ahead with experiments in genetic mutation. The Communist-run country has been experimenting with dogs by modifying their DNA and making super-muscled dogs that are stronger and faster than ever.

As a Christian and a believer that God’s creations are things of beauty and perfection I feel sickened with news like this. An immoral country like China which has an extensive history of human rights abuses will have no problem advancing on to human DNA and altering God’s human design. With experiments you will always have failures and that means deformed and horrifically altered humans that would simply be killed and disposed of like garbage. To me, this is very sad and disturbing.

The dogs, which are test tube bred in a lab, have twice the muscle mass of their natural counterparts and are considerably stronger and faster.

The canine genome has been especially difficult to engineer and replicate – but its close similarity to the human genome means it has long been the prize of geneticists.

Now the Chinese success has led to fears the same technology could be used to create weaponised super-humans – typifed in Marvel Comics by Captain America and his foes.

Excerpt 1: from address delivered in Salt Lake City on July 18, 1953.
Excerpt 2: from address delivered at Brigham Young University on May 18, 1960.
Two Contending Forces

Excerpt 1: Today two mighty forces are battling for the supremacy of the world. The destiny of mankind is in the balance. It is a question of God and liberty, or atheism and slavery. The success of Communism means the destruction of Religion. As stated by a government committee:

Communism cannot dominate family life until it has first fought its way past the influence of religion upon the family. Communism cannot force its own brand of moral code upon a person without first destroying his moral code rooted in religion. Communism cannot make education a weapon in its hands so long as religion is secure in its own right to teach and to educate unless it has the power to remake the life of the people. It cannot ignore religion and do that.

Excerpt 2: I come with another theme this morning—Two Contending Forces. Those forces are known and have been designated by Satan on the one hand, and Christ on the other.

In Joshua’s time they were called “gods of the Amor-ites,” for one, and “the Lord,” on the other. Paul spoke of “the works of the flesh” on the one hand, “fruits of the spirit” on the other. They are often spoken of as “selfishness” for one, “life of service,” the other. In these days, they are called “’domination by the state,’” on one hand, “’personal liberty,’” on the other; communism on one, free agency on the other.

As a text I say to you, “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” (Joshua 24:15)

Hosea 4:1

1Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. 2By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood. 3Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away. 4Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.

Mark 8:36

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

33But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. 34And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. 36For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 38Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

2 Corinthians 4:3

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:”

1Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; 2But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 3But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 5For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. 6For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 7:16

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

McGuffey’s Readers

American Minute with Bill Federer

Selling a million copies a year for over 100 years, McGuffey’s Readers were the mainstay of public education in America.

Generations of school children read them, making them some of the most influential books of all time.

They were written by William McGuffey, who died MAY 4, 1873.

A professor at the University of Virginia and president of Ohio University, William McGuffey began one of nation’s first teachers’ associations.

In the foreword of McGuffey’s Reader, 1836, he wrote:

“The Christian religion is the religion of our country.

From it are derived our prevalent notions of the character of God, the great moral governor of the universe.

On its doctrines are founded the peculiarities of our free institutions.”

McGuffey’s Eclectic Sixth Reader, 1907, included a quote from Lyman Beecher:

“While most nations trace their origin to barbarians, the foundations of our nation were laid by civilized men, by Christians …

The memory of our fathers should be the watchword of liberty throughout the land;

for, imperfect as they were, the world before had not seen their like, nor will it soon, we fear, behold their like again.

Such models of moral excellence, such apostles of civil and religious liberty…To ridicule them is national suicide.”

McGuffey’s Eclectic First Reader included a lesson “Evening Prayer”:

“At the close of the day, before you go to sleep, you should not fail to pray to God to keep you from sin and from harm …

You should thank him for all his good gifts; and learn, while young, to put your trust in Him; and the kind care of God will be with you.”

In McGuffey’s 5th Eclectic Reader, 1879, is a lesson by William Ellery Channing, titled “Religion-The Only Basis of Society”:

“How powerless conscience would become without the belief of a God …

Erase all thought and fear of God from a community, and selfishness and sensuality would absorb the whole man.

Appetite, knowing no restraint … would trample in scorn on the restraints of human laws …

Man would become … what the theory of atheism declares him to be — a companion for brutes.”

William Holmes McGuffey’s Fifth Eclectic Reader, 1879, included Lesson CXIII, “A Picture of Human Life” by Samuel Johnson:

“Temptation succeeds temptation, and one compliance prepares us for another; we, in time, lose the happiness of innocence, and solace our disquiet with sensual gratifications.

By degrees we let fall the remembrance of our original intention, and quit the only adequate object of rational desire.

We entangle ourselves in business, immerse ourselves in luxury, and rove through the labyrinths of inconstancy till darkness of old age begins to invade us, and disease and anxiety obstruct our way.

We then look back upon our lives with horror, with sorrow, and with repentance; and wish, but too often vainly wish, that we had not forsaken the paths of virtue.”
McGuffey Readers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
McGuffey Readers were a series of graded primers for grade levels 1-6. They were widely used as textbooks in American schools from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, and are still used today in some private schools and in homeschooling.

It is estimated that at least 120 million copies of McGuffey's Readers were sold between 1836 and 1960, placing its sales in a category with the Bible and Webster's Dictionary.[1] Since 1961, they have continued to sell at a rate of some 30,000 copies a year.[1]

Joshua 1:8

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
